Madison City Council Honors Dalai Lama

The Madison City Common Council unanimously passed a Resolution honoring the visit of H.H. The Dalai Lama to Madison and will fly the Tibetan national flag during his visit from May 12 to May 16th in Madison. Members from the Deer Park Buddhist center, UW-Students For free Tibet and the Wisconsin Tibetan Association were there at the meeting to speak and show their support for the Resolution.

Geshe Sopa Lak Director of Deer Park Buddhist Center thanked the members of the common council on behalf of H.H. The Dalai Lama, the Deer Park Buddhist center and the Tibetan people throughout the world for the care and concern shown by the common council in the Resolution and that he was deeply moved by the respect the council had for H.H. and the compassion they had conveyed to the Tibetan people. And also that their action will help to promote peace and justice for Tibet.

Skip Kindy, who was the director of the Tibetan Resettlement Project, thanked the City Council and the former Mayor, Paul Soglin, for all their help and support in getting the Tibetans over to Madison. He thanked the members on behalf of 500 Madisonians who had helped with the Tibetan resettlement project for bringing up this Resolution to welcome H.H. The Dalai Lama and fly the Tibetan National flag in Madison.

Miranda Hofmann who is one of the leaders of Students For Free Tibet (UW) thanked Ald. Barbara Vedder for sponsoring this Resolution and said that "It was wonderful to see the support in the City of Madison and the State of Wisconsin and that there had also been a Resolution passed by the State Assembly last year to fly the Tibetan National Flag over the State Capitol on March 10th. She thanked all the members of the Common Council for taking up this resolution, and for promoting social responsibility on the issue of Tibet.

Chris Hall who is also one of the leaders of Students For free Tibet (UW) said that it was very gratifying for those who work for the this cause to see the City of Madison to take up this resolution to recognize H.H. The Dalai Lama and his work for peace and Universal responsibility. Also that it was very important at this time especially when their is increasing local, national, and international attention focused on Tibetan issue. He thanked and appreciated the fact they had shown their concern for Tibet and H.H. The Dalai Lama.

After the Resolution was passed Sherab Phunkyi President of the Wisconsin Tibetan Association, presented a Khata (white scarf) to the the council as a traditional Tibetan form of gratitude for passing the Resolution.
